How to Fix TV Sound Problems (No Sound, Low Volume & Audio Delay)

TV sound problems are very common and can be frustrating. Your TV may have no sound, low volume, or delayed audio. The good news is that most of these issues can be fixed at home with simple steps.

In this guide, we’ll show you why your TV sound isn’t working and easy ways to fix it.

Common TV Sound Problems

  • TV has no sound at all

  • Volume is too low even at max

  • Audio is delayed or out of sync

  • Sound comes only from one side (left/right)

  • TV mutes automatically

Causes of TV Sound Problems

  • Muted TV or remote

  • Incorrect audio output settings

  • Loose or damaged HDMI/audio cables

  • Software glitches or firmware issues

  • External speakers or soundbars not connected properly

  • Hardware issues (TV speakers damaged)

Fix 1: Check Mute and Volume

Before anything else, make sure the basics are correct.

Steps:

  1. Press the Mute button on TV and remote

  2. Increase volume to at least 20–30

  3. Make sure external speakers (if any) are powered on

Fix 2: Check Audio Output Settings

Incorrect settings often cause no sound or delayed audio.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings → Audio / Sound

  2. Make sure TV speakers are selected (if using TV speakers)

  3. For external speakers, select Audio Out / HDMI ARC / Optical

  4. Turn off Dolby / Surround sound temporarily (sometimes causes delay)

Fix 3: Check HDMI or Audio Cables

Loose or faulty cables can break audio.

Steps:

  1. Turn off TV and unplug HDMI/audio cables

  2. Reconnect cables securely

  3. Try a different HDMI port

  4. Replace cables if problem persists

Fix 4: Restart or Power Reset TV

Many sound issues are due to software glitches.

Steps:

  1. Turn off TV

  2. Unplug power cable

  3. Wait 5–10 minutes

  4. Plug back in and turn on

Fix 5: Update TV Software

Old firmware may cause audio glitches.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings → Support → Software Update

  2. Check for updates

  3. Install latest firmware

  4. Restart TV

Fix 6: Check External Speakers or Soundbars

If using a soundbar or home theater system:

  • Ensure it’s powered on

  • Correct input selected

  • Volume is up on external device

  • Reconnect or reset device if needed

Safety Tips

  • Avoid opening the TV speakers yourself

  • Use only recommended audio cables

  • Keep TV firmware updated

When to Call a Technician

  • TV still has no sound after all fixes

  • Only one speaker works

  • Crackling or distorted sound from internal speakers

Final Thoughts

Most TV sound issues can be fixed quickly at home. Always start with volume, mute, and settings before assuming hardware damage. Regular updates and proper cable connections prevent most problems.
